Pauline Hanson her house's main selling point

Pauline Hanson her house's main selling point

16 Feb, 2010 05:34 AM
REAL ESTATE agents are famous for portraying things in the best possible light and the man selling Pauline Hanson's Queensland home has turned his skills not just to her property but also to the former One Nation leader's political career.

After reports yesterday that Ms Hanson was preparing to start a new life in Britain, the realtor Keith Edwards was given the job of drumming up interest in her $1 million-plus, 59-hectare homestead.

''I must be the happiest estate agent in Australia,'' he said. ''The phones have been ringing off the hook and I've already been round to Pauline's place to take down the sign twice so that TV crews could film me putting it back up.''

The marketing material for the home in Coleyville - about 65 kilometres south-west of Brisbane - makes great use of Ms Hanson's career. Under the heading ''Pauline's paradise lost,'' the copy reads, ''Arguably the most instantly recognisable woman in Australia, Pauline Hanson, the creator of One Nation, the party that took on and shook the Australian political scene to its very core, has said 'Enough is enough!'''

Mr Edwards is not ruling out a supporter of the former federal MP bidding for the four-bedroom home.

''Pauline was a hugely popular politician and I'm sure there would be some people who would like the idea of living in her former home.''

The news of Ms Hanson's impending departure sparked debate across Australia. While the Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, said he could understand if people were disappointed with her move, the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, called on the electorate to recall how Ms Hanson's anti-immigration policies hurt Australia's international standing.

Ms Hanson's former political svengali David Oldfield even suggested the move to England - where the far right British National Party won seats in the European Parliament last year - could spark another bid for power. ''Is she retiring or is going to become involved in politics in England?''

Ms Hanson put out a statement yesterday insisting she would never give up being ''an Aussie''.

''I have no intention of ever renouncing my Australian citizenship,'' she said.

Photos of Ms Hanson's property give an intriguing insight into her personal style.

Among the items on display in the 15 year-old home are a wooden clock in the shape of Australia, a statue of three prancing horses on the dining table and what appears to be a portrait of Ms Hanson in the living room.

While Mr Edwards is hopeful a Hanson devotee may want the home, he is equally aware that many might be just as keen not to live in ''Pauline's paradise lost''.

''I guess quite a few people may be put off the property because of its current owner.''

Refugee Rudd should order the Government to acquire Pauline's property and turn it into a national shrine!

Pauline you will be missed. You were only saying what we were thinking, and had the guts to do so. No one can say we weren't warned!

Her love for her country was so deep she did what was best for it - she left. Unfortunately, the culture of complaint and dissatisfaction that she was the lightning bolt for is probably here to stay.

A shrine to what, Tige? Ignorance? Racism? Agrarian socialism? Stupidity? Ringer, right on!

Bushie Bill, To freedom of speech and the Aussie Way!

Happy to support freedom of speech bit, Tiger, but "the Aussie way"? What exactly is that? It is unequivocally dynamic and in constant evolution, as is everything else in the world (a fundamental point that perhaps you, and certainly many others, fail to grasp). Or is the Aussie way confined to your definition (if so, what is it?). It is an amorphous concept, and in the way you state it, is meaningless. PH is a simpleton, with little education and intelligence, which, in itself, is not enough to rule her out, but if she is unprepared to make even the minimal effort to exhaust her limited intelligence, and the level of education precludes the ability to think clearly and rationally, then her contribution is/has been negative. Just to refine our thinking a little, Tige, would you list her contributions to a better and more cohesive society? What good things did she do? I can’t think of a damned thing for which to give her credit, but I can think of many where she was nothing more than a destructive bomb-thrower, stirring up the latent racism and hatreds which for many Australians are just below the surface. However, it did create publicity that she craves. Pity about cost

To continue, Tige, Pauline sought to and succeeded in, for a time, promoting ignorance and emotional prejudices (with the underlying racism and destructive nationalism) to acceptable characteristics for many Australians. She promoted lowest common denominator philosophies, where the intellectually lazy, the unimaginative, the luddites, would be promoted and rewarded as reflecting “the true Australian spirit”, the "Aussie way", if you wish, Tiger. It was a philosophy which decried seeking higher objectives and ideals. It was a philosophy which took Australia back 50 years to an Australia that never really existed. She was a lost soul, who thought the only way she could gain a meaningful life was to put other Australians (the ones that didn’t meet her definition, Tige) down, put Australia into reverse gear while the rest of the world moved forward. Her “swamped by Asians” was pure racism and a demand to have her ignorance and prejudices recognised and rewarded. No wonder Howard was happy to let her run; he was right behind her in philosophy, and knew she would eventually break her own political neck.

To Bushie Bill, what Pauline said wasn't racism but reality, and sentiments many Aussies shared with her.

I wonder how long Pauline will stay in good old Pommyland, now that it's been swamped by Paki's, Indians and dozens of other 3rd world refugees? What about when she lands at Heathrow, and a big dark-skinned Indian or Paki, says in a thick subcontinent accent - "welcome to my country!". She's due for a large cultural shock, when she finds that the Muslims are building a new mosque in Pommyland every week, and burqas are as common as jeans. Wait until she finds the local council is run by Muslims, and the councillors are all .. shock, horror .. "coloured people!" I bet she'll be back here in a flash, just like every other discontented Pom, as she whines about how the lower classes of lazy coloured people have ruined everything. Maybe she'll move to Spain, there's any amount of discontented groups of expatriate Poms who've already done so. So long Pauline, we really won't miss your antics.

She is too much of an idiot to be paid attention too. If she thinks people are going to side with her on her views on anti-immigration and xenophobia - then she'll only get a small audience. There are people who may share the same opinion as Pauline Hanson, but they are few and far-between. The rest of us have the common logic to have a sense of justice, and what is right. If she thinks Australia is too multicultural, wait till she gets to Britain and sees all the different cultures there. In regards to her selling her house, I know I most definitely wouldn't want to live in a house she had lived in. Apparently she is refusing to have her house sold to Muslims. And as for Tony Abbot he "could understand if people were disappointed", well I'm assuming he is one of them. At least Anna Bligh isn't a stupid and deluded politician, which Tony Abbot most certainly seems to be.
