Comongin for sale in Show week

31 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
IN FULL bloom after a great season, iconic Quilpie district property, Comongin, is expected to set a benchmark for far western pastoral land when offered for sale during Royal Queensland Show week.

Held by the same family since 1882, Comongin will be auctioned by Landmark in the Mercure Hotel, North Quay, Brisbane, on Wednesday, August 10, at 2pm - one of the rural interest highlights at the start of Ekka week.

Comongin has a history dating back to the first pastoral settlements in the western Queensland region.

This proud history is testimony to the productivity of the property, currenlty held by Henry and Jocelyn Harkin and family. The 93,905-hectare (232,045-acre) property is located immediately north of Quilpie.

Included in the sale of Comongin are 6000 Egelabra-blood sheep plus lambs, plus 800 Shorthorn/Santa Gertrudis-cross cattle joined to Santa bulls. Also included is full station plant including Cat D6 dozer, grader, truck and motorbikes. A full inventory of stock and plant is available on request.

Comongin is divided by the Bulloo River, with about 56,700ha (140,000ac) lying west and 36,450ha (90,000ac) east of the Bulloo. The landform includes large areas of river channels and flood plains along the Bulloo, plus extensive areas of gidyea, leopardwood, and sandalwood on the west rising to the Grey Range. The eastern portion has large areas of soft mulga country and a good balance of soft, sweet grassland with abundant native grasses and herbage.

A capped, flowing artesian bore piped under the GABSI scheme in 2001 waters up to 32,400ha on the homestead side of Comongin, with 165km of piped water delivered to tanks and troughs.

Permanent Bulloo River waterholes and expansive Lake Youngwoman at Comongin homestead have never been dry in the history of the property.

The Western portion is now fenced off from the Bulloo River for stock, with four 5355cu m earth tanks recently constructed and a 10,710cu m earth tank cleaned out. There are another 22 existing earth dams, plus semi-permanent and seasonal waterholes in Nickavilla and Mouthing creeks.

Up to 60km of new fencing was recently constructed to double fence the Bulloo River, while the rest of the holding is well divided with grazing and holding paddocks and internal fencing in stock-proof condition.

Structural improvements include two sets of shearing sheds, yards and quarters, homestead, cottage, quarters, sheds and two sets of steel cattle yards.

Comongin is estimated to carry 20,000 sheep plus 1500 cattle.
