Internet lamb marketing success

30 Jul, 2009 03:41 PM
LONGREACH district producers Andrew and Maree King (pictured) have combined the best of sheep farming and the internet - and found a market for their organic lambs by jumping online.

Their website has been up and running for six months and is proving to be a successful tool for the Kings to market their organic lamb under the label, Silverwood Organics, which Brisbane and Sunshine coast customers can buy online and have home delivered.

The fourth generation farmers have two properties outside Longreach, Silverwood and Westfield, comprising a total of 17,000 hectares.

They run 6500 ewes, 600 wethers and aim to turn off 3500 lambs a year, and are looking to turn off around 2000 lambs this year.

The Kings changed from Merinos to Dorpers 10 years ago and went down the online path more recently after having trouble finding a market for their lambs.

"We had a really good quality product and got tired of trying to find markets for it when we knew the wholesalers were doing what was best for them and not by us," Mr King said.

"We decided to try and do it ourselves and it's growing each month."

The Kings only supply southern customers at the moment but are looking at expanding to service Toowoomba, Charleville, Rockhampton and Emerald areas. Online customers have two options ? a full lamb pack or half lamb pack which includes legs of lamb, roast, cutlets, loin chops, lamb sausages and even the family dog gets a taste of the action with a parcel of organic bones.

The full pack is 20kg and the half pack 10kg.

"There are families and couples buying our lamb, which goes direct to their door,'' Mr King said.

"They order and pay online with it all happening automatically. Then we do up a manifest for that load and our delivery driver will knock on the door and give them their fresh box of lamb."

While only a small percentage of their lambs supply their online market they have big hopes for that to change.

"We aren't selling our entire lambs through this yet and we still have to sell some over the hooks, it would only be about 10pc at the moment but it is a feasible option for us to sell our entire lamb crop each year over the internet by retail, straight to customer's doors, which is what we are aiming for."

While their customers are down south, local businesses profit from the idea with the lambs processed in Blackall at Barcoo Butchery and freighted to Rocklea by Emerald refrigeration.

Customers can go online for Mrs King's favourite lamb recipes. She is a former home economics teacher.
