Rodeos are horrifying entertainment, says Gold Coast mayor

19 Jun, 2009 10:33 AM
GOLD Coast Mayor, Ron Clarke, thinks rodeos are "horrifying" and "human entertainment at the expense of animals".

He said he attended his one and only rodeo after being invited to one featuring horses and bulls at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre two years ago.

"I've been told that animals love it but that's not how I saw it," he said. "I hated seeing what they do to animals to make them buck. They (pro rodeo people) say that they love bucking, so why do they stop bucking when the riders are off and the belts around them are loosened?"

Straps are placed around animals' flanks and tightened uncomfortably to encourage them to buck.

"I thought it was horrifying and didn't stay long," he said. "I'm an animal lover and get upset when I see them being tormented to act out of character. They (rodeos) are definitely human entertainment at the animals' expense."

Anti rodeo groups are angry that another rodeo will be held at the centre next Friday and Saturday. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) president, Troy Dunn, billed the event as "a two night, knock 'em down, drag `em out action spectacular..... with the nation's fiercest beasts and the world's toughest athletes."

Cr Clarke said the rodeo was run as a private function and not endorsed by the council. "If the organisers ever seek money from the council for the event, I'll certainly be voting against it."

Wendy Parsons from Animals Australia said a horse died after crashing into a fence at a Gold Coast rodeo in January while children watched. She said filming is usually banned at rodeos so activists are prevented from getting evidence of cruelty. "At a rodeo in South Australia this year I smuggled in a video and filmed a bull breaking its leg and being shot and a steer limping off on three legs.

"This is what the rodeo industry calls family entertainment."

She said she hid under a truck as security officers searched for her to confiscate the footage.

RSPCA spokesman, Michael Beatty believes all rodeos should be banned because they are cruel.

Brian Sherman, managing director of the animal protection institute, Voiceless, said "rodeos are an entertainment spectacle built on the back of a huge amount of animal suffering."

"Animals are also forced to participate in extremely physical and inherently risky activities which can lead to injuries, pain and death," he said.

" The Australian Capital Territory has banned rodeos and Voiceless calls on other state and territory governments to follow suit and bring an end to the legalised suffering of animals in rodeos."

ast year, the State Government gave the Mount Isa rodeo organisers $50,000 to undertake a feasibility study into how to expand it.

The Premier, Anna Bligh defended the funding saying there were "strict rules" to protect animals and riders. The rodeo was one of the winners announced last week in the government's Queensland 150 Icons competition to celebrate the state's 150th birthday.

Animal Liberation's Annette Guice said Australians should not be glorifying animal abuse as something be be celebrated.

I tend to agree with everything Ron Clark says about cruelty. Rodeo is an unfortunate adoption of another mindless American past-time. It's a bit like eating McDonalds or KFC. In the long run it does us no good. As a cattleman I deplore the damage. In our business we train our stock to be quiet and relaxed. Our bottom line depends on it. I have first hand experience of a business devoted to providing horses and bulls to the rodeo circuit. The neighbouring properties bear the brunt of continually escaping bulls, half starved horses and a neighbour's poor overall property management. It does nothing for that community and neither does rodeo in general for our wider Australian social ethic.

Ron Clarke - Qualifications: self granted animal lover - thinks rodeos are cruel. Well I love people and think that emaciated humans running round and round a synthetic track until they get high on endomorphins, and occasionally collapse in sickening fashion, is cruel. I vote we ban athletics.

savannan says it all!! I didn't invite Ron Clarke to the Mareeba Rodeo, and watching him starved (very fit apparently) run around a track. Get a Life and stay out of mine!!

As horriffic as it is to see an animal die, rodeo animals are some of the best looked after animals in the country. I have been to hundreds of rodeos and never seen an animal injured. Should we ban people from owning cats and dogs??? I see more animals neglected and abused in the towns and cities than I have on the rodeo circuit. If rodeo is shut down and banned, the movement will go underground where the safety and well being of animals is not policed resulting in more cruelty. There are so many rules and regulations in favour of the animals. Animals do like to buck. Haven't you seen a mob of bullocks fresh in the morning? Like all groups, some people should be banned from owning animals due to cruelty but don't punish the majority. When you can understand the amount of skill needed to work and ride these animals, rodeo can be quite entertaining.

Of course Rodeos are full of animal cruelty, but try telling that to the "Would be Cowboys" with big egos who consider torment and brutal treatment of animals is what makes them feel strong and powerful. Banning rodeos would save thousands of unfortunate animals from needless cruelty.

So people want to ban things that they don't understand or are different to what happens in the smoke. The nannies are starting to win. Some people are just not happy unless they can rally against some cause.

Rodeos no doubt remind the mayor of the conduct of some of his council meetings. Horrifying but not entertaining.

This is ridiculous. When are you people ever going to stop. We will have no sport left. They also want to ban girls in the school yard from doing hand stands and cart wheels. My god, we were put here to live life. The rodeo stock used for these events are well cared for and more often than not...love what they do. Maybe the mayor should get a life...

I fully agree with Mayor Ron Clarke that rodeos are 'horrifying'. Calf and steer roping can result in calves suffering broken legs and backs. Steer and bull wrestling can cause an animal to sustain broken and splintered horns. Why don't these fake cowboys get a proper job instead of torturing animals.

I recently attended a rodeo out at a place called Stonehenge Western QLD as we tripped around and I have now been converted to anti rodeo - the language of the competitors was less than desirable, the treatment of the stock was deplorable. The Association that sanction the deplorable treatment is the Queensland Rodeo Association. Does the RSPCA not go and check out these rodeos? I grew up on a station and we certainly did not treat our stock like these stock get treated. It is about time our government steps in and does something as well !!!
