UPDATE: Dalby prime cattle sale gains slight ground

25 Jan, 2012 12:22 PM
QUEENSLAND's benchmark prime cattle sale, Dalby, has gained slight ground this afternoon with the Queensland Cattle Market Index closing on 199.3 points at the end of the 4130 head sale.

The QCMI stood at 198.7 points when the MLA's National Livestock Reporting service issued its interim report at 11.45am (Qld time).

However, the QCMI is down from 213.6 points at the same time last week reflecting a significant easing in the cattle market.

The NLRS report said falls of rain in parts of the supply area had reduced numbers to 4120 head, down 679 head on last week.

Overall prices eased at Dalby. However, the NLRS reported that vealers and lightweight yearling steers and heifers to feeder operators, restockers and the trade sold to a market 2c to 6c/kg dearer. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged 9c cheaper and heavy feeders lost 12c/kg.

Medium and heavy weight yearling heifers averaged around 3c to 4c/kg easier. Heavy steers and bullocks to export slaughter lost 12c to 15c/kg, with a portion of the drop in price attributed to the lesser quality penned. Cows also suffered price reductions of 12c to 15c/kg.

A fairly large supply of lightweight yearling steers sold to restockers and backgrounders in the 240c/kg range with some to 258.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed averaged close to 218c and sold to 241.2c/kg. A good supply of heavy weight yearling steers to feed mostly sold around 198c with some to 211.2c, while D muscle lines to feed averaged 182c/kg.

Lightweight yearling heifers to feed and to the trade averaged in the mid-220c/kg range, and some returned to the paddock at 245.2c to average 237c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed mostly sold around 207c with some to 219.2c/kg.

Heavy steers and bullocks to export slaughter mostly sold around 181c with a few sales to 186.2c/kg.

Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 129c and 3 scores 139c/kg. Good heavy cows made to the occasional 165c with a relatively large sample 15c cheaper at 153c/kg. Heavy Bulls made to 163.2c/kg.
