Floods force stud sale reshuffle

13 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
BOONAH stud Brahman breeder Chris McCarthy is a young man in the industry going places ? but not this week.

Chris is among a handful of vendors who should have been selling at the Silverdale Saleyards near Kalbar on Saturday as part of the Fassifern Valley Brahman Female Sale.

But with many of those vendors coming from Central Queensland and the North Burnett where conditions still remain either impossible or too treacherous for transporting cattle, organisers pulled the plug on Monday night, postponing the sale until March 27.

"It doesn't faze me too much," said Chris. "In fact, I think it might even be a good thing.

"We'd rather be offering our cattle to a full panel of buyers and maybe the rain will bring more people out than would have been there before when the weather was drier.

"Hopefully they'll also have the confidence to spend more."

But Chris isn't the only cattle breeder gazing into his crystal ball this week, as a rash of weather-induced sale delays force the stud stock industry to contemplate the impact of their changed circumstances.

Agents, vendors and buyers are shuffling their diaries in a mad dash to find alternative dates.

The Longreach Bull Sale, due to be held on March 19 will now take place on April 30.

Three Droughtmaster events will also be delayed. The Gatton Futurity due to be held on March 6 will now happen on March 27 and the National Store Cattle Show and Sale in Emerald will be staged on April 15.

The Billabong Droughtmaster on-property female sale, Moura, due to be held on March 27 has been postponed to May 8.

Michael Smith, Elders stud stock officer, Toowoomba, said while the date changes were irritating the long- term benefit from the rain was keeping spirits high.

"Hopefully when producers are out cleaning up and fixing their fences they'll be able to take a look around and see what they need in terms of restocking," he said.

"It also means that vendors have more time to prepare so that when the sale date comes they'll be lining up with a much better article that purchasers will have the confidence to buy."
