Dog days may be at an end: AgForce

12 Oct, 2011 03:00 AM
THEY cost Queensland's sheep and cattle industry $67 million annually, so eradicating wild dogs is something producers take very seriously, according to state agricultural body, AgForce.

Tools for managing wild dogs and the latest eradication strategies will be the focus of a series of Western Queensland wild dog days hosted by AgForce, through funding from Australian Wool Innovation.

The predator control field days will be held in Winton, Stonehenge and Aramac on October 25-27 and will feature presentations and demonstration from key predator control experts.

AgForce Wild Dog spokesman and Paroo landholder Peter Lucas said the workshops cover practical methods and strategies to manage wild dogs.

Wild dogs have a devastating impact on Queensland graziers, but control can only be successful with the support and involvement of all landholders and local councils,” Mr Lucas said.

A rise in wild dog populations across Queensland and a growing awareness of the significant cost of attacks, bites on carcases and disease costs spread by dogs means many more people are looking for the best control option to suit their enterprise,” Mr Lucas said.

Mr Lucas will explain the ‘Paroo Model’, Australia’s most successful system of broad scale dog management in pastoral areas plus tips and tricks in coordinated control/landholder syndicates.

Landholders will also hear from National Wild Dog Facilitator Greg Mifsud outlining strategic management approaches to control wild dogs and trapping demonstrations by professional trapper and wild dog caller Tony Townsend.

AgForce policy staff will also provide an overview of key rural issues including coal seam gas, leasehold land and leasehold rent in the morning, with the rest of the day focusing on wild dog control (including presentations on coordinated control methods and a free copy of a brand new trapping DVD will be given to all participants).

Field days are delivered free to all landholders by AgForce in partnership with Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) and AgForward, funded by the Queensland Government.

To attend please contact AgForce on (07) 3238 6048 or email roep@agforward.org.au.
