THE organising committee of the Callide Dawson Carcase Competition are aiming for increased entries in their live assessment competition this year.
Publicity officer Mike Bradshaw said the section, which will be held on April 17 as part of a field day at the Warnoah Feedlot near Moura, was a great opportunity for school-aged children to compete to guess the live weight, carcase weight, eye muscle area and rump fat on five steers.
Mr Bradshaw said the five steers were then slaughtered at Teys Bros Biloela, with the winner taking home the Lionel Cavanagh Memorial Trophy.
"Lionel was a great supporter of the competition for many years, he knew the great experience for children to attend the field day," he said.
The Nobbs family from Bauhinia have provided the cattle for the live assessment competition for close to 10 years.
Meantime the executive committee for the Callide Dawson Carcase Competition has remained unchanged after their annual general meeting last week in Biloela.
David Anderson, Moura, is again president while Denis Clair, Goovigen, will continue as vice-president.
Donna Reynolds, Dululu, will again take on the role of secretary, while Girle Goodie, Monto, continues as treasurer and Col Esdale continues as the data processing officer.
Todd Amor will again be the Teys Bros representative and Murray Davis, Biloela, is the sponsors representative.
Tanya and Nicole Hartwig, Monto, are in charge of the live assessment competition.
Mr Bradshaw said the competition was in top gear currently, with the remainder of grainfed steer or heifer entries closing on February 14. Cattle are to be delivered to the Warnoah Feedlot, Moura, by February 16.
Last year there were 188 grainfed cattle in a total of 404 head.
"This year the committee is focusing on good prizemoney, numbers of entries and the live assessment competition for the young people of our beef industry, who are the future," Mr Bradshaw said.
