Heatwave burns Qld horticulture

31 Aug, 2009 01:38 PM
Queensland's heatwave has had a devastating effect on the State's $5.65 billion agricultural sector, The Australian Financial Review reports.

Some produce in the middle of their peak season may be in abundance now, but the heat is expected to have brought forward stocks and left many growers struggling to pick their crops.

Queensland's avocado industry, which provides 78 per cent of the national produce, is in a crucial pollination period of its cycle.

Avocados Australia chief executive Antony Allen said the impact of the heatwave would not be known for eight weeks.

The state's strawberry industry, worth about $180 million, is at its peak, but Strawberry Industry Queensland development officer Lourens Grobler said the heat had accelerated the crop and, although the berries were sweeter than ever, an oversupply meant prices were below cost for growers.
