FRUIT and vegetable suppliers are tapping the funny bones of Australian consumers in a bid to increase their consumption of fresh food.
Who better than to help them achieve their goal than one of the nation's most loved characters and widely known greengrocer, Con the Fruiterer (pictured).
Con, otherwise known as comedian Mark Mitchell, was at Brisbane Markets on Monday on a national tour to wholesalers and retailers as part of an effort to lift alarmingly low rates of fruit consumption in Australia.
Four in 10 Australians (39 percent) say they are eating less than the recommended two serves of fruit a day - be it fresh, dried, frozen or juice - according to a Newspoll survey of 1200 adults.
And when it comes to fresh fruit, which packs the hardest nutritional punch, the figures are particularly bitter, with only half of all adults surveyed eating two serves a day.
The new survey backs up findings from a 2007 report into children's eating and physical activity habits, which revealed that only 1pc of 14-16 year olds consumed enough fruit.
A concerned Con says it's time for Aussies to lift their game.
"They is not getting enough," he said. "I tell you something - Australia is the lucky country.
"We have some of the world's sweetest, joosiest, unbelievit bewdiful summer stonefruit thanks to our warm weather, so go crazy and get stuck in while it's fresh in-store for yous," he said.
