GRAIN growers and industry representatives are being encouraged to attend a forum in Toowoomba on April 22 that will discuss the future of grains research, development and extension work in the northern region.
The Grains Research Foundation Limited (GRFL) and Conservation Farmers Inc (CFI) have joined forces to initiate a forum that will give industry stakeholders an opportunity to have their say on key issues and priorities for grains research in the region.
The forum will also invite input into the development of an industry-driven strategic plan for grains RD&E in the Northern Region.
GRFL chairman Damien Scanlan said grains RD&E was under threat from a decline in funding, reduced scientific capacity and an acute shortage of students.
CFI chairman Pete Mailler said the forum would enable the grains industry to participate in an open process for considering issues and genuinely engage grain growers in defining and prioritising the input for a strategic plan for RD&E in the Northern Region.
"The output from the day will then be taken to research and funding organisations to assist them in formulating their own plans."
