High hopes for young bull rider

20 May, 2009 04:26 PM
Townsville will have a hometown hero to cheer on this weekend as local lad Rhys Angland prepares to take of the world's best in the PBR Troy Dunn International.

21-year-old Angland is a favourite coming into the competition and will be flying the flag for Queensland as bull riders from across the country and the world converge on Townsville to decide who's got the skills to ride time on Australia's best bucking bulls.

"It's good to be ranked among the top, but it's a fair weight on your shoulders," Mr Angland said.

"It's mostly a head game and I try not to get too excited too early."

With rodeos nearly every weekend, Angland has taken a professional approach to the sport, ensuring he's both physically and mentally prepared.

"I try and keep pretty fit and make sure I'm focusing on keeping balanced during the ride," he said.

Angland has only a few years of open competition experience under his belt, first riding open bulls at age 17.

The contract fencer and horse breaker has spent time riding in America to hone his skills and is dedicated to reaching the top of the sport.

Outside of the rodeo ring, Angland is a keen polocrosse player and competed at a state level but is looking forward to the challenge of the PBR Troy Dunn International.

PBR Australia president Troy Dunn said six of the world's top 40 riders would make their way down under for his signature event, held over two nights on May 22-23.

An Australia vs the Rest of the World format will kick off proceedings on Friday night, with two rides to score points for their respective team.

On Saturday night the 10 internationals will line up against a field of thirty Australians, all vying for a slice of the $50,000 prize money and the opportunity to wear home the 2009 PBR Troy Dunn International event buckle.

Sport fans have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the bull riders from today when Palmer Street Townsville hosts the 2009 PBR Troy Dunn International Riders presentation.

With Palmer Street closed to vehicular traffic Professional Bull Riders Australia will introduce ten of the world's top international bull riders and present them with their official 2009 PBR Troy Dunn International shirts.

A Q&A with Australian bull riding legends Troy Dunn and Brendon Clark will follow the shirt presentations, before fans have the chance to press the flesh with the cowboys during a signing and photo session.
