New cotton body in touch with growers

03 Mar, 2009 06:10 PM
The new Cotton Australia got off to a strong start last week after a well-attended and well-received inaugural meeting in Goondiwindi.

Cotton Australia is the result of the marriage between the old Cotton Australia and the Australian Cotton Growers’ Research Association late last year.

Cotton growers from across Australia were in attendance to help set priorities and develop a strategic plan.

"There’s a lot of work to be done, but we’re off to a great start," Chief executive officer Adam Kay said.

Phil Firth, from Wee Waa said there was "excitement in the air".

"For the first time Cotton Australia is taking feedback from growers from all the production areas."

Recent heavy rains contributed to a sense of optimism among those at the meeting.

"I’m very confident about the future of cotton in Australia. It’s a very important annual crop," Mr Kay said.

"We have three times the yield of other growers in the world, and we’re the most water-efficient, so the future looks good."
