QUEENSLAND Opposition Leader John-Paul Langbroek is confident he will lead the LNP to the next state election, despite a failed leadership coup against his deputy Lawrence Springborg.
The Australian Financial Review reports that outspoken backbencher and first-term MP Aidan McLindon yesterday failed to convince enough of his party room colleagues to back a leadership spill against the LNP founder - losing 29-5.
But the fact the motion received any support from the 34 LNP MPs will undermine Mr Langbroek's leadership and cast doubt about whether the Langbroek/Springborg team will take on Premier Anna Bligh at the 2012 election.
Mr Langbroek moved swiftly after the party-room meeting yesterday to draw a line under the issue, but not before sacking his deputy whip Rob Messenger who seconded the motion for a leadership spill.
