Bligh's new vision fails to mention farming

8/09/2008 4:06:00 PM
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has today unveiled a new blueprint for the State for the next 10 years, but she has failed to list agricultural policy as part of her vision.

The document – Towards Q2 Tomorrow’s Queensland – outlines her Government's plans and priorities for the future, with early childhood education one of the key planks.

"Queensland has grown remarkably over the past ten years but we must act now if we are to take the next leap forward," Ms Bligh said.

"Challenges such as climate change, unhealthy lifestyles, preventable disease, population growth, and global competition have the potential to destroy our quality of life.

"Towards Q2 is my plan to beat the challenges and seize the opportunities."

The blueprint outlined ten specific targets for 2020 under five broad headings – strong, green, smart, healthy and fair.

The targets by 2020 are:

• building Australia's strongest economy with infrastructure that anticipates growth;

• increasing by 50pc the proportion of Queensland businesses undertaking R&D;

• cutting Queenslanders carbon footprint by one third with reduced car and electricity use;

• protecting 50pc more land for nature conservation and public recreation;

• all children to have access to quality early childhood education so they are ready for school;

• three out of four Queenslanders to hold trade, training or tertiary qualifications;

• cut obesity, smoking, heavy drinking and unsafe sun exposure by one third;

• reduce public hospital waiting lists to the shortest in Australia;

• halve the proportion of Queensland children living in households without a working parent; and

• increase the proportion of Queenslanders involved in their communities by 50pc.

"Everyone will need to play their part in goals such as leading healthier lifestyles and reducing our carbon footprint," Ms Bligh said.

Vision for agriculture, what vision? Labor's main voter base is in the city. They probably believe that they don't need us farmers. They may change their minds when most of us have had to walk off the land and there is either no food on their tables or if there is, the scarcity of supply will have driven the cost of it through the roof. But then, I guess, it could always be imported from overseas.

Given Labor's past performance in Qld, I doubt Cap'n Bligh can successfully achieve one of her feel-good targets. They don't have the ministers in any portfolio with the intelligence, skills or capability to achieve any of their aims in an efficient manner. In short, when you have a cabinet full of drongos, you can't expect much at all.
