 Barnaby bucks the trend

Barnaby bucks the trend

26 Jul, 2010 06:56 AM
RIDING a huge satanic bull intent on causing you bone-breaking harm or running for Federal Parliament - it's hard to know which is worse.

In less than a week, the Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce has travelled more than 8000 kilometres by car and plane across Queensland. From the Atherton Tablelands in the far north, to the dusty cattle town of Longreach, down the coast and out west, he has endured the hand-shattering grips of locals and the glare of spotlights cast from dozens of cameras.

Rising before dawn, he has rushed madly between airports, car rental offices, small north Queensland towns and meetings where lamingtons and reactionary politics abound.

By Saturday he is in Longreach, helping to herd 1600 head of cattle while photographers and reporters mill about.

At night, as he sits down to a dinner at the airport with about 50 businessmen flown in on the mining magnate Clive Palmer's private jet, across the road the Longreach rodeo is under way.

The headline act is the Queensland Brahman bull-riding finals. Under spotlights in a fenced dirt ring, the bulls careen out of the gates, kicking over three metres in the air with hooves that could smash cement.

The wide-eyed animals thrash and spin in a frenzy as the lean cowboys grip with one gloved hand a thick rope wrapped around the bull's belly.

Jared Borghero is leading the competition on Saturday night after two rounds of bruising battle with the huge, snorting Brahman bulls. A fellow rider says it's about time that Mr Borghero won.

''They always bully me at rodeos,'' Mr Borghero, 20, says. ''Maybe I'll go into politics, go and see Julia Gillard.

''Actually, too much shit to put up with in politics. We got a lot better job. I couldn't sit in an office; they couldn't keep me in school let alone an office.''

Earlier in the day the Herald had sat down with Senator Joyce, who said he had some regret at his busy schedule. ''In the first six months of last year, I spent eight nights in my own bed. I know because [my wife] Nat reminds me,'' he said.

''One year I got home for 45 days, the next year I got home for 22. Now that can't go on.''

For a man who is generally touted as the next leader of the Nationals, he is vague about his intentions, other than saying he will not seek re-election as a senator after this term.

''These terms go for six years. I don't think there's something noble about saying I'm going to stay here till the last drop of my blood. I'm going to stay here while I'm effective.''

That leaves two choices - stand for election to the House of Representatives or leave politics altogether.

Which way he is leaning at the moment, he won't say.

Supporters of real freedom appreciate everything Barnaby does. Without him we would have had the "Great Big Tax on Everything" money grab under the guise of fixing global warming. We need people like Barnaby as the Labor Governments that we have are racing us into socialism controlled by union heavies, taking away our freedom to choose how to run our businesses, who to employ (can't get rid of an incompetent employee without months of counselling, but continue to pay them), continuing taxes under the guise of fees and levies, conservation regulations which are mainly to attract the vote of the Greens and nothing to do with the situation on the ground, and so it goes. Go Barnaby, we appreciate every single thing you do, and thanks a million to your wife and family.

Concerned Northerner has so eloquently presented some interesting facts on Barnaby and other issues - well done. Barnaby is like a diamond in the rough, those who recognise his qualities see the gem hidden within. Unfortunately there are those whose ignorance prevents them from recognising and appreciating what Barnaby has achieved, and will continue to achieve. Especially when Gillard and the Goose get chucked out on their ear next month. Ride hard Barnaby, real Australians appreciate what you stand for.

Barney Joyce has excellent political instincts, when it comes to the concerns of the average Australian. The reason for that, is firstly because he has the courage to stand up and be counted, and secondly he gets away from the rarefied atmosphere of Canberra and actually talks to and listens to ordinary people. Last night on Q & A I had the extraordinary experience of hearing Malcolm Turnbull parroting Barnaby Joyce on government debt and waste.

Barnaby Joyce is a real person with real opinions and real weaknesses and real people love him for it. He is closer to knowing what the down to earth, grass roots Australian wants because he is a grass roots fella himself. Dare I say it.... a bit like the Blonde haired state independant in North Qld. Hang in the Barnaby.."you go girl".
