Passing on knowledge about farming to school students is the task of AgForce members who make up the Rural Champions Volunteer Program, which is a grassroots addition to Every Family Needs a Farmer campaign aimed at boosting consumer understanding about where food and fibre comes from.
AgForce has created a register of farmers throughout Queensland who volunteer to champion the rural cause and in so doing help educate school students and consumers who have lost their connection to farming communities as our society becomes increasingly urbanised.
Rural Champions are involved in educating students and the public at local, regional and state events – including at the Brisbane Ekka, where the program is to be officially launched tomorrow by Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke at the AgForce/MLA MEATing Centre.
AgForce says Mr Burke is a fitting candidate to launch the Rural Champions program because his big idea at the 2020 Summit was to make agriculture the career of choice for young Australians.
