FOUR Queensland riders lead the standings early in their pet events in the 2012 Australian Professional Rodeo Association season.
With all early-season action in NSW, Victoria and South Australia, Queensland competitors Cameron Bell, Andrew Turvey and Kerry Turner (pictured) have taken the lead in their individual events.
Bell hails from Gracemere and is on top of the leader board in steer wrestling. He was second in round five of the National Finals Rodeo at the Gold Coast last year.
After an outstanding 2010 when he spent most of the season near the top of the standings, Thallon cowboy Turvey is an early leader in 2012 saddle bronc standings.
He is in front of two of the best in the business, Wantabadgery, NSW, cowboy Rhys Angland, and Oxley, Vic, rider Brad Pierce, who is a past winner of rookie all-round and bull riding titles in the US.
Turner, of Charlwood near Aratula, has started the season in fine style to lead breakaway roping standings.
American cowboy Tyson Durfey is a new addition to top-15 standings in the APRA and is the rope and tie leader after the first two months of the new season.
In all-round standings, Mt Tarampa cowboy Thomas Whitwell is sixth behind leader Cody Tyrrell, of Tongala, Victoria.
Tyrrell leads the open bull ride standings from two Queenslanders, Joe Polkinghorne, Bluff, and Beaudesert rider Jared Borghero.
The Victorian cowboy is on target to win plenty of rookie pro tour buckles this season. Tyrrell already leads the rookie all-round, bull ride and bareback bronc standings.
Gunnedah rider Wade Clifford is on top of the bareback bronc standings, while Garry McPhee, Lurg, Vic, and Toby Collins, Maldon, Vic, are the top team ropers in the nation early in the season.
In cowgirl standings, the top Queenslander is Cheyenne Whitwell, second behind leader Amber West, Dreeite, Victoria.
Amber McIntyre, Molyullah, Victoria, is on top of early season barrel racing standings.
