 Rodeo a family affair

Rodeo a family affair

31 Dec, 2009 12:38 PM
RODEO can rightly claim to be a true family sport going on the number of couples, siblings and family groups who have qualified for the National Finals Rodeo.

There are family groups from all over Queensland who are geared up for the rodeo, hosted by the Australian Professional Rodeo Association on the Gold Coast from January 7.

And overall, one quarter of the finalists will be competing along with a relative.

There will be three members of the Kenny family at the finals - all around cowboy pro tour champion Shane Kenny, his wife Leanne and Shane's brother Kacey.

All three compete in timed events and are from Emerald.

The Hanrahan siblings from Emerald, Grant and Tenielle, have both qualified for the finals.

In the Western Downs area, husband and wife Ricky and Rebecca Knudsen, of Taroom, are both in the finals, Ricky in the saddle bronc and Rebecca in the barrel race.

Ricky's brother Ken, who hails from Chinchilla, is also in the finals in saddle bronc after finishing fourth on the pro tour.

All around cowgirl champion Wendy Caban and her husband Troy from Moree are both on the way to the Gold Coast finals along with Troy's brother Dale, of Emerald.

Narrabri has a couple in the finals with Peter and Zoe Swain both making it into the top 15 in timed events.

Lee Kimber from Lockington, Victoria, is in the finals of the timed events as is his brother Heath from Cambooya in Queensland. Lee's partner Cherie O'Donoghue has the chance to win all three cowgirls titles at the finals.

Cherie's niece Shianne O'Donoghue-Kent is also in the finals.

Bruce Marsh and his son Jay Marsh from Melbourne will compete in the Gold Coast finals after outstanding years on the pro tour.

At the finals, every finalist starts with nil points so the 15th qualifier has as good a chance of winning a title as the pro tour champion if they can record a score or time in each of the five rounds of the finals.

APRA general manager Steve Hilton said ticket sales were well up on the same time last year.

"Tickets will be on sale at the door during the finals but it is advisable to book early as Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights could sell out," Hilton said.

"The bucking events should be good as we have more contractors than last year."

There are also Thursday night and Saturday afternoon sessions.

Tickets for the finals are much cheaper than last year and are available from Ticketek or on www.nfrgoldcoast.com.au
