Regrowth moratorium already costing jobs in Warrego

21 Apr, 2009 02:19 PM
LNP Member for Warrego Howard Hobbs says the State Government's Regrowth Moratorium has already caused landholders to lay off staff and place their properties up for sale.

Mr Hobbs said some landholders have been so busy trying to survive during the drought that they did not have the financial and time resources to complete PMAVs.

Now they have found half their property affected by the moratorium, Mr Hobbs said.

"One landowner who has contacted me said they have laid off staff and will not be able to support the seven family members with accommodation and electricity because they can no longer improve their property due to the moratorium," Mr Hobbs said.

"They have told me there is no point trying to improve their property, as it will have no value and they will just have to spend the rest of their life there (on farm) as it will be impossible to sell."

Mr Hobbs said his office had been inundated with calls from landowners upset about the State Government claiming it wants to create 100,000 jobs when many landholders normal business operations had been halted by the moratorium.

"If the Government has got the science or methodology wrong, and they have got the mapping wrong on numerous occasions in the past, there is no right of appeal or compensation for those affected, then we have a sham situation," Mr Hobbs said.

"This is totally the opposite to the LNP's position as we strongly believe that compensation should be paid when a property right is lost and in the development of comprehensive property plans should define landholder’s rights and responsibilities."

Mr Hobbs encouraged all landholders to check websites for details on the moratorium www.derm.qld.gov.au or 13 13 04 and the maps at http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/nature_ conservation/biodiversity/regiona l_ecosystems/introduction_and_sta tus/Regional_Ecosystem_Maps/

Th e Government has also invited stakeholders to make submissions by May 15 and individuals can provide comments through their representative organisation or by contacting DERM by email on VMEenquiries@nrw.qld.gov.au
