The CSIRO will accelerate the development of an emergency treatment to combat the deadly Hendra virus, which is unique to Australia.
The Australian Financial Review reports that the organisation will collaborate with animal health companies in Australia and internationally as it works on a horse vaccine, which is expected to take three to five years and cost about $1 million.
The race to find effective treatment for the virus has been given added urgency as the Australian horse-racing industry is gearing up to export to China.
A CSIRO spokesman said $200,000 had been made available for the production and development of antibodies to treat the virus.
