North Qld swamped

12 Jan, 2009 02:42 PM
In just a handful of hours many parts of North Queensland last week overtook their entire 2008 rainfall, as floods have replaced in the region.

According to Sam Daniels, Brodie & Co, Cloncurry, the town recorded just 36mm for all of 2008.

But the Bureau of Meteorology has already recorded 276mm this year for the town, with isolated falls of up to 600mm.

The rain has continued since then with widespread flooding across the State's North West, and more is on the way thanks to Cyclone Charlotte.

The Bureau of Meteorology has today issued flood warnings for the Gulf Rivers - the Nicholson, Albert, Cloncurry, Flinders and Norman - as well as the Diamantina River.

Acting Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that the Federal Government will provide financial support to Queensland to assist in the flood relief effort.

Through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Assistance (NDRRA) program the Government is currently providing assistance to 12 disaster-declared Queensland local government areas following monsoonal flooding.

The damage to local roads and public infrastructure is estimated to be $21.5 million though this is likely to increase.

The Federal Government will provide partial reimbursement to the Queensland Government for its expenditure on a range of natural disaster relief and recovery measures, including personal hardship and distress assistance (such as emergency food, clothing and accommodation) for those affected by the recent storms in North West Queensland.

The Commonwealth will also reimburse between 50pc and 75pc of eligible state expenditure on a range of other measures including restoration or replacement of essential public assets such as roads and schools.
