Massive rain and storms drench southeast Queensland

17 Feb, 2010 06:33 AM
A LARGE area of southeast Queensland including Brisbane has been hit by the heaviest downpours in nine years as rain and storms drench the region.

The Brisbane CBD was awash with more than 80mm falling in just 50 minutes leaving the city's roads under water, bringing traffic to a standstill and sending workers scurrying for cover.

The rain started just after 11:30am yesterday and reached its peak between 11:50 and midday when a massive storm dumped 25mm of rain. This is the heaviest 10-minute downpour the city has seen at least eight years. By 3pm the city had gained 90mm, their highest 24-hour total in nine years.

This storm has since moved off the Gold Coast.
