IT'S not just the northern tropics being hammered by heavy rain due to Olga's remnants, with moisture now sliding further south affecting areas as far as Mackay.
Olga clipped the northeast tropical coast as a category 2 cyclone on Sunday, before quickly losing strength and crossing inland just south of Cairns as a tropical low.
On Monday, the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Olga started forcing their way further inland over the northern tropics. As it does so, very moist northeasterly winds are being forced along the remainder of the tropical coast.
Around Mackay many areas saw over 100mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Monday. One of the worst hit areas was Dalrymple Heights, which saw their best January rain in 19 years with 213mm.
Moving further north in the tropics, Paluma, northwest of Townsville also saw over 100mm with their total reaching 142mm. A bit closer to Cairns, Topaz joined the club with 108mm.
Cairns itself only saw 21mm to 9am, but after a wet month they are now 97mm over their normal January average of 392mm.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Olga will only slowly edge south of the Gulf of Carpentaria and will continue to draw moisture over the tropics through the next week.
