Greens have power to stop the Traveston dam now: Truss

15 Sep, 2009 03:06 PM
Nationals Leader, Warren Truss, says The Greens have the power to stop the Traveston Crossing dam by ditching any future preference deals with Labor until the dam is scrapped by Premier Anna Bligh.

Greens Leader Bob Brown has described the proposed dam as "the most damaging project that's conceivable", even though it was Green preferences to Labor in the recent Queensland election that allowed Labor to form government and for the dam to proceed.

"If Senator Brown is sincere in his comments, he has the political power to stop the dam now by telling Anna Bligh and Kevin Rudd that The Greens will not entertain any preference deal with the Labor Party until they axe the dam," Mr Truss said.

"Anna Bligh does not care about the environment, but she and Mr Rudd do care about votes.

"I would like to think that Senator Brown cares more about the environment than his relationship with the Labor Party."

Mr Truss said there were no strategies that could prevent devastation being wreaked upon the endangered Mary River Cod, Mary River Turtle, Giant Barred Frog and the vulnerable Queensland Lungfish should the dam proceed.

"Brisbane’s water crisis is of Anna Bligh’s creation, and in spite of Anna Bligh’s recent spin and hysteria, there are better and cheaper alternatives available to supply water to Brisbane, which make the Traveston Crossing dam unnecessary," Mr Truss said.

Garrett will vote this dam in, because the future nuclear power station will need this dam for water cooling. This is the missing link. Why else would such a stupid dam be enforced on SEQ. What didn't we know? This is it. The Federal Govt. has had a different agenda all along. It's not about the drought or global warming, it's about a future nuclear power station.

Traveston Dam would be an environmental disaster, nothing short of vandalism. Anna Bligh doesn't appreciate agriculture or the environment. All she wants are city votes and $ from mining royalties. The Qld Gov't has the big stick out over tree clearing, yet they're the biggest environmental vandals in the State, wanting to build dams that aren't necessary and allow mining on prime farming land. And Peter Garrett is nothing more than a puppet on a string, so there's no hope of him acting on his conscience.

Traveston is the trade off between the greens and Anna: You say nothing about Traveston and we will lock up most of the outback and Cape York under the guise of "Conservation". For all it's worth... National Parks are mostly feral animals and lantana with the exception of some of the areas open to Joe Blow!! SECEDE NOW!!!

Great in theory but the Greens have already prosituted themselves. They have no credibility left. They will do anything to get what they really want. As far as the Greens are concerned any remonstration to the government about Traveston Dam can wait and it will be a LNP goverenment that they will wage protest with, not the current Labor government, which has made the decision. (Part fo the deal - not us says Anna!)

The LNP were offered the opportunity to unite with The Greens against Traveston Dam at the last state election. They refused point blank to enter into any negotiations with The Greens - they knew that too many LNP rednecks would completely choke at the idea.

Well the Greens better pull their finger out and get into what they believe. They have several disasters going on around the country at the moment, Traveston Dam, Transgrid high voltage (killer line) transmission line through the Tenterfield District, Liverpool Plains coal mining travesty near Gunnedah and the water pipeline into Melbourne from the Goulburn river. Wow I really don't know what the politicians think when they get into power. They lose all common sense (if they had any to start with) when they sit in their seats and get fat.
