Ekka to turn up the volume

Brisbane's Ekka show is hoping to attract a whole new audience this year.

A number of high-profile bands will perform at the nine-day event, which has been a family favourite for generations.

The musical acts have been added to the program after a recent RNA survey revealed how Brisbane residents believed the annual show could be improved.

Local pop acts The Grates, Katie Noonan and Operator Please will play, as will The McClymont Sisters and The Beautiful Girls.

The live performances will be held on different days throughout the event.

RNA chief executive Jonathan Tunny said Ekka organisers wanted to heighten the show-going experience for punters.

“The Ekka is the people's event, it belongs to them, it's woven into their history growing up so it was important to the RNA to find out what they thought about the Ekka, what the Ekka should be and what they wanted to see more of.” Mr Tunny said.

Patron feedback has also resulted in a wider range of food options and the introduction of shaded picnic areas to protect people from the Queensland sun.

A new animal arena will be included and a popular attraction from previous decades, the Cotton and Wool fashion parade, will make a highly anticipated return.

Mr Tunny said the research revealed Queenslanders have an overwhelming sense of pride and unique generational connection to the Ekka.

The event's rich traditions, warm spirit and nostalgic memories resonated deeply with the community, he said.

Research author Glenn Hardy said rarely had he come across an event with such a strong connection with the people.

"All Queenslanders are touched by Ekka from an early age and it clearly travels with them through their lifetime," he said.

Despite the changes, the Ekka will not abandon old classics like buttered corn, doll on a stick, show bags. Night entertainment will remain be a big part of the event.

The 133rd Royal Queensland Show will run from August 5 – 14.
