Toowoomba tannery terminates trading

23 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
A COMBINATION of the high Australian dollar, tough international conditions and processing cost increases have forced Toowoomba-based tannery New Wave Leather to close after more than a decade in operation.

Owned by Nippon Meat Packers Australia, New Wave will cease trading on February 8.

The decision will affect 38 full-time and 15 casual employees. The company said it was working with local providers to help find alternative employment.

It is understood there have been expressions of interest for employees from meatworks in the region.

The New Wave facility had been processing up to 20,000 hides per week, producing a wide range of hide selections and weights.

Toowoomba Mayor Peter Taylor said the facility was being put into a holding pattern, with the company maintaining the plant in good working condition and he hoped to see the facility reopen in the future.
