Victorian Senator calls on AWI directors to resign

12 Mar, 2010 09:30 AM
A CALL has been made for Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) directors Meredith Sheil and Chick Olsson to resign their positions following a letter from Italian manufacturers accusing the two of having a conflict of interest.

Victorian Liberal Senator and member of the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport Committee, Senator Julian McGauran, said the signed letter by some of our biggest wool customers was the last straw in what has been an ongoing saga of alleged conflicts of interest by the two directors.

The conflict of interest relates to a possible commercial stake by the two directors in the drug Tri-Solfen and its alleged promotion through their position on the AWI Board.

“The conflict of interest issue has been building up for over 12 months and the two directors have failed to dispel the perception that they are using their position on the Board as a commercial spring board.

“They only had to say 'no?'” Senator McGauran said.

Senator McGauran said that at a Senate Estimates hearing last year even the Chairman of AWI, Mr Merriman when questioned by him did not know whether there was a real or perceived conflict of interest by the two directors regarding their commercial interest in the drug Tri-Solfen.

“There has been a veil of secrecy around the involvement of Dr Sheil and Mr Olsson's alleged commercial interests in the drug Tri-Solfen…it is time the veil was lifted.

“There has been too much ducking and weaving as to the true standing of the two directors which has cost the Board its credibility at home and abroad.

“It is better that the two directors place the reputation of the Board and industry ahead of their own interests and resign,” Senator McGauran said.

I recall Dr Sheil denying any continued involvement with this product when she was on a lunchtime talk back radio segment some 18 months ago. I hope this was accurate. In any case, I see no positive results from Dr Sheil or Mr Olsson being on the board.

two things - it never seems clear what exactly is the status of Olsson and Sheil with regards Trisolfen although Dr Sheil is all over the trisolfen web page. Secondly, as someone who developed and then sold the product to BAYER it is not unusual that there would be a royalty arrangement in place but again this is just surmising. The point is no one is clear and it would appear these people have been elected because of one issue "mulesing" - prob the most emotive issue in recent history of the wool industry.

If a director is to have the capacity to truely represent the industry there can be no conflicts on any issues. It is admirable that one of these directors has acknowledged his conflict however this only points out that he can not contribute to the Boards debate on this issue; an issue which is challenging wool buyers from around the world and therefore potentially growers returns in Australia. That the director can not see this problem and take the decision himself shows he should not hold the position.

Senator McGauran is right. A company director must always work for the best interests of the company on whose board they sit - not their own private or commercial interests. End of story. Wally, you have never walked away from hard decisions. Don't start now.

This board dumped the mulesing deadline, which has given this industry some badly needed confidence. DR meredith, do not listen to these anti mulesing idiots. Keep up the good work.
