Challenger's C series debuts

20 Apr, 2009 04:50 PM
ONE of the first of Challenger’s C series tracked tractors from Agco Australia debuted at a recent Brookstead field day in southern Queensland, with little on the outside to distinguish them from the A and B series machines it replaces.

But enthusiasts immediately spotted the different nose badge from its predecessors with more serious technical advances evident once seated in the 'office', which has impressive all-round window space.

On hand to talk me through the MT755C model was McIntosh and Son’s Tony Osborne, who made the point the newcomer comes with a new-generation ISOBUS control which is agriculture's 'Windows-like' control system, thereby permitting implement makers to display information on one screen in the tractor cab.

"Once in the cab, drivers no longer have about six different screens," he said. "Instead, there’s just one common, standard screen."

As a result, when a user plugs in the property’s air seeder, or a boom sprayer, the ISOBUS compatible technology will display all the relevant information on the one standard monitor, in colour, too.

"Gone are the days when cabs had so many displays they were blocking up cab windows," Mr Osborne said.

It's all about the widespread adoption of ISOBUS control technology that increasingly is being adopted by tractor, implement and machine guidance system manufacturers with in-paddock performance able to be transferred to a standard SD card or a USB for detailed monitoring back at a farm’s office.

Meanwhile, the new screen and associated armrest control upgrade will also allow users to monitor the tractor’s automatic steering system.

Look out too, for the tractor's One Touch headland management system which is able to store any number of functions and operating sequences.

It is now possible to opt for two pre-set engine speeds, depending on whether the tractor is hard at work or simply turning at a headland, to further maximise operational efficiency.

The MT755C is the mid-ranger in a three model line-up, pumping out 225kW (301hp) with an available power boost to 249kW (334hp). All are fitted with Caterpillar’s ACERT Tier 3 diesel engines.
