Improving the welfare of animals in the live trade industry

12 Mar, 2010 07:40 AM
THREE new projects with a combined value of $1 million have been announced under the Federal Government's Live Trade Animal Welfare Partnership.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke earlier this week announced that the Government and livestock exporters and producers would invest more than $900,000 in the projects to improve animal welfare in the major live export markets in the Middle East and South East Asia.

Mr Burke said improving the welfare of animals was crucial to support a sustainable and profitable live export trade.

The projects aim to improve post-arrival animal welfare by upgrading animal handling infrastructure and providing training to those involved in animal handling and transport in the Middle East and South East Asia.

The partnership is funding a range of improvements to upgrade and maintain animal holding and handling facilities in Malaysia, Indonesia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Training will also be provided to local animal handlers in each of the countries.

These projects were recommended for funding by the Live Trade Animal Welfare Partnership Project Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the live animal export industry and an independent member.

I would like Tony Burke to guarantee to me, and the rest of the caring Australian public, that this 'investment in animal welfare' will mean that NO Australian sheep is dragged by the ears, that no Australian sheep is kicked, put into a car boot, slaughtered while fully conscious, pushed off the back of a truck. If the Minister thinks that this pathetic amount of money will mean he is 'meeting community expectations for animal welfare' he is desperately out of touch with the Australian public. Unless the Minister can guarantee that no animal will suffer in the live export trade then he - and the Labor Party - are supporting the worst animal cruelty. The Government should be ashamed - and this announcement just makes the him look ridiculous.

Burke spending another lot of hard-earned taxpayers' money on supporting this CRUEL trade. How about spending the money on supporting our Australian workers in slaughterhouses? What a load of tosh about improving welfare in the ME. You could spend billions and never make one iota of difference...stop sending the animals. That would make a difference. But then Australia doesn't care about animal welfare - it cares for MONEY.

Me Burke, as far as I'm concerned you would have to be one of the most uncaring people regarding animal welfare that is possible to find. I don't believe you would even bother to find out what really can happen to the millions of live animals exported to some of the most barbaric places on earth. You are wasting thousands of taxpayers dollars just to try and please the greedy live exporters and their equally cruel and greedy supporters. You will never stop the animal cruelty that is part of some of these countries. It is surely time this disgrace to Australia was ended now and forever.

Thanks Tony, more good thinking from you. Its interesting that its farmers putting their levies on the table, to make a difference to animal welfare in the ME. The defeatist attitude of other posters here clearly shows that they don't even care about animal welfare in the ME, but farmers combined with yourself are showing them the way, by making things happen. Alot of these vegies simply can't be helped. They live by a flawed philosophy.

I know how you can end all animal cruelty and suffering in live export- by ending live export.

The ammount of needless cruelty inflicted on Australia's agricultural animals is an absolute disgrace. Millions of animals are exported live to face the brutality of countries that are known to mistreat animals. Those who supply livestock for this trade totally ignore the suffering these animals will endure. In my opinion this way of farming is nothing but cruel, barbaric animal treatment, and is supported by people with no concern for what happens to their animals.

Surely, Tony Burke isn't so naive that he would have us believe throwing $1 million of taxpayers money to make improvements and stop cruelty will be acceptable to the Australian people. In this region the Middle East, cruelty to animals is so extreme and is part of their culture, it won't change in the forseeable future. A recent investigation in the Middle East with video footage proves once again cruelty and mishandling of Australian farm animals continues. Raise your voices loud and clear good people to end this abhorrent trade in live animals and consign it to the dustbin of history where it belongs.

Tony Burke Robbin Hood ,Rin Tin Rin- whoever have no intention of trying to phaze out this barbaric trade . I think that much is clear. So instead of beating the PETA drum Or WSPA RSPCA National etc etc- why dont you all insist they put their millions into reopening abattoirs in Australia. I mean its a jolly good question- isnt it. Put their money where their mouths are. Tony Burke is just another person working with Government. He knows very little about the industry and lets face it if he did see something- and speak out against live exports hed be out of a job. However hes not stopping you or any of these groups investing in buying up some abattoirs and exporting chilled to compete with live. What better way to spend the publics money who donated towards ending live exports.
