BSE analysis to hurt our trade: CCA

BSE analysis to hurt our trade: CCA

14 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
THE Cattle Council's Greg Brown says Tony Burke's decision to order an import risk analysis is going to take too long.

Mr Brown said the checks on countries wanting to bring beef to Australia under the changed rules for BSE should not take "a couple of years to do" and he fears what action may follow if this new IRA is seen as a trade barrier in other countries.

Mr Brown said Cattle Council believed the risk assessment already promised would have been sufficient, and those that did not take that view "don't know".

"They've been spooked by a lot of people out there.

"I will guarantee there wouldn't be two cockies in a million that would have any idea what it means.

"We've made an attempt to explain the situation but nobody else has."

Mr Brown said the alleged risk of BSE coming to Australia and infecting the Australian cattle herd had been "beaten up" by Senators such as Bill Heffernan, Nick Xenophon and Fiona Nash, and he said most of their claims had been based on "misinformation".

"Let's put this in perspective and stop talking about this ridiculous risk factor. There's no suck thing as nil risk, and minimal risk is about as low as you'll possibly get."

The NSW Farmers Association – a key member of the Cattle Council - this week passed a resolution calling for the IRA and in-country inspections before imports commenced at a meeting in Griffith.

Mr Brown, who was present at the meeting, said it was "their business" what resolutions the association passed, but it would not form part of Cattle Council policy because it already had a previously agreed to position on the matter.

Mr Brown should also explain why we need NLIS. If we can import meat from any country without traceability why on earth do we need it here. Weve been told by Cattle Council for long enough about the access NLIS would give cattle producers and how it would pay for itself in higher returns for producers. Cattle Council can't have their cake and eat it too. Oh!! except they can, their funds come from producer levies moved from Consolidated Revenue to a reserve to support them, and therefore they are government employees and don't represent cattle producers.

Mr Brown, It is no good crying now. The "Industry" (you) should have stopped the free trade agreement and the side letter concerning BSE at the outset. I don't remember any consultation of cattle producers about the side letter and the free trade agreement with the USA that still gives the USA control over meat imports to the US for a futher how many years??

Dear Greg With 'friends' like you we don't need enemies. To top off your arrogance and senseless position you choose to insult us as well with the statement ' I will guarantee there wouldn't be two cockies in a million that would have any idea what it means'. If ever the old saying 'it takes one to know one' was true it sure as hell applies here.

Thankgoodness for the New South Wales Farmers Federation. If the truth be known their are a lot more Beef Producers who feel the same way, you only have to ask people their thoughts on this affair. And it is incredibly nieve of the cattle counci, to think its just people involved with ABA and Bindaree Beef, im certainly not .l

Let's have an Income Risk Analysis of pork producers - if we can find any. 75% of pork eaten at Christmas was imported! Shame, shame, shame. We now have time to amalgamate our beef industry and promote ourselves to local and international consumers. Show us transparent leadership and integrity, Team Oz.

Has the 'King Brown' forgotten that NSW Farmers are a grass roots group whose members determine policy? Has he forgotten that NSW Farmers are members of Cattle Council and that if they convince other groups on there like VFF and SAFF then the position will change? Maybe it has been forgotten and maybe ABA have a point?

Gees who cares about side letters, are we convinced this won't affect our terms of trade? If you don't believe it will then fine, but I am not so sure. What about our entry requirements for testing for Ecoli.0157H7? If they increase that which they can and probably will in retaliation, they will test every load of our product. They do that and the costs are passed back to producers. Do we believe Bindaree will wear the costs? Yeah right! Did the people who put up the IRA and all the alternatives investigate these issues prior to tearing into the heart of the industry? I guess not. So who will fix the issues when they arise from this issue? Not ABA or the Federal Government I can assure you. I support neither side nor belong to any institution, like most producers I assume. NLIS is not here for market access now; it is here for the future. If we get an exotic disease it may get us back into our markets sooner. We export according to MLA $100 million a week. If it gets us back in a week early it's paid for itself. I beg you all please look at the alternatives before attacking. NZ has been able to manage this issue for 3 years, why cannot Australia? Are they better than us? I hope not

Well said daw. The conceit and arrogrance of this man is unbelievable! However, given that he keeps claiming that 'his' proposal would lead to a mere trickle of import, why does he suppose that any other country will want to retaliate? Fools should always keep their mouth shut.

The mission of the Cattle Council is to represent and progress the interests of Australian beef cattle producers. When are you going to work for me instead of the misguided establishment?
