Philippines pessimistic about banana exports to Oz

18 Mar, 2009 02:56 PM
Australia's import conditions for Cavendish bananas were too "stringent" for exports from the south-east Asian nation to come here, a Philippine government official has said.

A Philippine publication, Business World Online, has quoted Philippine agriculture undersecretary Segfredo Serrano as saying: "If the conditions are that strict, no industry can profit through exports."

A media release sent to Rural Press yesterday had

Bureau of Plant Industry director Joel Rudinas saying that Australia had continuously stopped the importation of bananas since 1995 for the "flimsiest" of reasons.

I've read an article a week or so ago about Simon Crean signing a trade agreement with The Philippines and importation of banana could be one the items involved in return for Australia's export to The Philippines.

No thanks to Philippine bananas. My money goes to supporting Australian producers only.
