Growers to have a say in grain variety trials

13/08/2008 4:45:00 PM
Grain growers will have an opportunity to express their opinion in a review of the national variety trials announced today by the board of the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

The NVT is a national program of comparative crop variety testing which has grown to include more than 580 trials at more than 250 sites across Australia.

Speaking during the board's tour of South Australia's Eyre Peninsula region this morning, GRDC chairman Keith Perrett said the corporation was seeking input on the NVT.

"This review is an important opportunity for growers and everyone else in the industry to tell us if they think there can be some improvements to the system, and how it has served their needs to date," Mr Perrett said.

NVT was established in 2005 by the GRDC in response to growers' requests for transparent, independent performance testing of crop varieties, he said.

"Managed by the Australian Crop Accreditation System (ACAS) Ltd, NVT provides growers, agronomists and consultants with independent information about how varieties perform in their region.

"Trial sites are established according to agreed protocols, and variety testing uses standardised trial management, data generation, collection and dissemination procedures.

"The NVT system lends growers confidence in their decisions when choosing varieties for their farming system."

* People seeking to make a submission or fill in the NVT survey should visit the GRDC website at www.grdc.com.au or contact Juan Juttner at the GRDC on (02) 6166 4500. Submissions close on September 12.
