AWB, ABB merger must benefit growers: NSW Farmers

AWB, ABB merger must benefit growers: NSW Farmers

01 Dec, 2008 03:07 PM
The NSW Farmers' Association says any merger between two of Australia’s major grain traders, AWB Ltd and ABB Grain Ltd, must be shown to be in growers' best interests.

AWB Ltd and ABB Grain Ltd accumulate grain from all grain growing regions across Australia, and trade in all grain commodities.

As such, NSW Farmers' Association Grains Committee chair, Richard Clark, says a merger will create one of the country's largest integrated grain companies, managing grain from the farm gate to domestic and export end users.

"The proposed merger has the potential to create a dominant position in the Australian industry which may deliver efficiencies to growers but will also need to be tempered to ensure effective competition continues," Mr Clark said.

"The Association will be seeking that the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ensures there is no reduction in competition from a marketing, logistics and port services perspective.

"It is critical to the future of the grains industry in Australia that there is significant competition from a marketing and logistics perspective to ensure best prices in the hands of growers."

It's incredible that Richard thinks that the merger will deliver anything to growers, the non grower owned public company cartel that's left holding all the cards has a legitimate and ethical obligation to maximise returns to shareholders, growers will be a means to that end. Just like incitec with fertiliser. If this merger occurs growers should invest their productive capital in the AWB and not produce anything next year. Richard as a NSW Farmers rep should be batting for farmer members interests and not a public company. The moment the accc is asked to adjudicate they will give their stock standard reply of "let the market place sort it out", which means "gouge the farmers" as usual, as has already occured this harvest, post deregulation. Time to starve.

More gobbledegook from the new president of the NSW Farmers Grains committee. He secured his new position as a result of the demise of the grower controlled marketer and as the grains industry crumbles around him all he has to offer is spin by the bucket load. Resign Richard!
