Voters can't pick who is better on climate

28 Jun, 2010 11:04 AM
TWO-thirds of voters cannot say if they think Labor or the Coalition would be better at handling climate change, in the wake of the government shelving its emissions trading scheme.

An Auspoll survey commissioned by environmental and activist groups and the ACTU found just 19 per cent rated Labor as better on climate change - its lowest level of support on the issue in 11 polls since March 2007.

Fifteen per cent preferred the Coalition, which has promised $3.2 billion to ''buy'' emission cuts but opposes carbon trading and would not force industry to pay to emit greenhouse gases.

Taken two weeks before Julia Gillard became Prime Minister, the survey underlines the government's failure to justify its decision to delay an emissions trading scheme until at least 2013.

Ms Gillard's position on emissions trading has been ambiguous since she replaced Kevin Rudd on Thursday. She has said she supports a carbon price, but has declined to back Mr Rudd's timetable of reviewing whether to introduce emissions trading at the end of the current period of the Kyoto Protocol in 2012.

Asked yesterday if she had pushed Mr Rudd to dump emissions trading she said she had been concerned by the lack of public consensus on climate change.

''I will be prepared to argue for a price on carbon, to lead, so that we get to that lasting and deep community consensus, but we're not there yet,'' she told the Nine Network.

She promised announcements about ''practical measures'' on climate change while the government worked on building a consensus.

The Auspoll found 83 per cent of voters were concerned that pollution was making climate change worse. Most believed the main parties were indistinguishable on the issue, including more than 80 per cent of uncommitted voters.

If 83% of voters believe pollution is driving climate change, why are we not taking serious action? Because, I suggest, no party has come up with a creditable strategy. If we bring in an ETS unilaterally we will force energy intense industries out of business, thereby increasing imports.e.g. an Aussie heavy spring maker recently lost his contract to supply to our rail industry. Result-our country, which exports enormous amounts of iron ore ,is importing tonnes of heavy iron based spings from USA. The extra carbon cost from transport of such a situation must be enormous. If we tax carbon here, as I believe we should, we must ensure the carbon cost of all imports is covered, either in the countries of origin & freight or by a levy on arrival. Shipping jobs & emissions overseas is just wrong on all levels!!

Neither party can control the climate!!

I want someone to tell me how the hell is putting a carbon tax in place going to change anything? If scientists and governments around the world were serious about this they would be doing something positive about it -not just taxing carbon and making money from it !! Let some of the big pollutors do something about it - America, Europe and just lately China and India. Maybe this is what all this noise is about - the West don't want China and India to have the same chance to progress - thus polute the same as England America and Europe have for years. Get real people - the climate is going to change, it has for the last million or so years. Why shouldn't it now? We should be more focussed on looking after the people on the planet and making sure that there is enough food for everyone - not making it harder for farmers to produce food. And you are so right Archibald - neither party can control the climate. If scientists and politicians would tell the truth then we would not be talking about this rubbish and we could maybe debate something important - like health or education or a hundred other more important issues !!!!!!

Gillard knows that any carbon tax / ETS will be inflationary and that will drive-up interest rates and that equals death at the ballot boxes! She hopes to ride the crest of her honeymoon back into government at the next election and she doesn't want to become the next Krudd and get executed politically when the carbon costs come home to roost in middle Australia.

Jeff, it's largely because we spend so much on high pollution items (big cars, big TVs, big houses, big air travel) that we cannot afford to properly fund the far more important areas of health & education. If society could reset its priorities we can solve climate change & the other big social issues.

Global warming theory started as an attempt to give credibility to Margaret Thatcher. Her supporters wanted the world leaders to take a woman seriously. It was based on a complete fraud. Some such as My Kids mutter have adopted as their religion. This prevents them from clearly seeing the fraud.

Len, the theory first emerged before the world had heard of Margaret Thatcher & was brought to prominence by NASA scientists. Religion is based on beliefs, scientific theory is based on FACTS!!!!!!!!

The fact is that the temperature rose 0.7 degrees in 60 years. It is dropping now. The warmists want to destroy the economy over a complete hoax. Some bankers and lawyers are in it for the huge amount of money they expect to get with no concern for the planet.

My Kids Matter, If we have big cars, big houses, big TVs, big air travel, this would tell me that we are an affluent society. Maybe over indugent, but nonetheless affluent! Therefore we are earning good money and paying good TAX. Nothing to do with climate change. What are our Governments doing with our hard earned? Not spending on health, education, roads or many other things that are running down. And also, not on climate change !!! So please tell me, what would they do with the money from a carbon tax ? Maybe more talkfests, more overseas juants. Maybe pay more scientists to brain wash people like you. Come on, for God's sake get real !!! Wake Up !!!!

The AGW conclusions in the IPCC's reports have been shown to be a fallacy. There is no credible evidence that man's CO2 emissions is causing global warming. There is no scientific evidence. Got it. The peer reviewed process at IPCC is corrupt. The climate has been change for millions of years. Latest satellite temperature data shows a cooling for the past decade. There is nothing man can do to change the climate. An ETS, Cap & Trade whatever you call it is a great big tax that will flow through every product we buy. It will sink our economy and only transfer wealth to those trading CO2 (e.g. Al Gore, George Soros, Pachauri-head of IPCC etc.). I'm not paying any ETS. Its a policy based upon fraud. A vote for labor is a vote for high taxes, big govt. and punishment for those who work hard and are successful, and for a welfare state. If you want a socialist govt. controlling everything in your lives then vote Labor. Otherwise Vote Liberal. And get rid of the Greens for goodness sakes. We'll all be living in the dark ages if they get any real power. Imbeciles!
