Coalition talks off: Libs-Nats tension rises

05 Nov, 2009 10:59 AM
BAD blood between Liberals and Nationals prompted senior party figures to cancel a meeting of federal Queensland Coalition MPs for fear tensions might explode into an angry scene.

The meeting, due last week, was to have been attended by Queensland Liberal National Party president Bruce McIver, formerly a National, who has become a centre of controversy among some Liberals.

Mr McIver goes to the regular combined meetings of the Queensland Coalition MPs when he is in Canberra. The MPs usually get together once every sitting fortnight.

Some Queensland Liberals, including shadow attorney-general George Brandis, have been critical of Mr McIver over his role in the failed attempt by shadow health minister Peter Dutton to win preselection for the safe seat of McPherson. Mr Dutton is having to recontest Dickson, which has become notionally Labor.

While the Liberals and Nationals are in the joint party in Queensland, they revert to separate parties in Canberra.

Tensions have escalated recently. Apart from the Dutton affair, the Liberals are angry at the high profile of Nationals Senate leader Barnaby Joyce, especially over emissions trading, where he is putting regional and rural Liberals on the spot.

The Queensland Liberals are also concerned about "branding" for the election - whether the Liberals and Nationals run under their own brands or under the Liberal National Party brand. Some sources claim a main factor in cancelling the meeting was that preparations on issues to be discussed, including "branding", were not far enough advanced.

The decision to cancel the meeting was taken by Liberal frontbencher Ian Macfarlane and Nationals leader Warren Truss. Nationals saw the incident as a snub of Mr McIver.

Barnaby should go for the jugular and get rid of Truss and Turnbull!

Get rid of Brandis as well. He does nothing for rural areas at all. He was against the amalgamation of the two parties so will do all he can to dismantle it.

This so called "problem" of Libs vs Nats only exists because a new state boundary, just north of Noosa, does not exist. It is time we all accepted that there is a world of difference between urban conservatives and regional ones, just as there is a world of difference between those two wider communities. Both parties understand what signals they need to send to their own communities but neither, it seems, will take the next step and create the 2 or 3 new state structures that will serve each according to their needs. Just face facts, fellas, a single Queensland doesn't work. It doesn't work for the metro South East and it works even less for the regions. The founders who drafted the commonwealth constitution recognised that State boundaries are the best way to differentiate a political brand. Lift your game.

Traditionally, the Nationals and Liberals only formed a coalition while in government. In opposition, they were always two separate parties. They contested elections as two separate parties.

Interesting point that there are urban and country Liberals ... of course that means that the urban Liberals get their way on decisions as there are more of them. No wonder the country areas are screwed!!

And how do you propose that be done, tigerdicky and SuzieQ? You don't, surely, in your wildest fantasies, consider BJ leadership material? His only skills are attention seeking and grenade throwing.
