 Abbott's enormous offer for regions

Abbott's enormous offer for regions

10 Sep, 2010 05:50 AM
TONY ABBOTT'S spurned offer to the two country independents included a permanent $1 billion-a-year regional infrastructure package - an offer well in excess of Labor's proposed total infrastructure funding of $1.17 billion.

The Sydney Morning Herald has learnt Mr Abbott's ''Fair Go for the Regions'' package would initially have been funded from unidentified offsetting savings, but in the longer term would have come from proceeds of new projects paying the petroleum resource rent tax.

By opting to support Labor to form government the independents instead secured $1.17 billion over the next four years for new bridges, roads, energy and water projects in the regions - part of the trumpeted ''$10 billion'' package of funding promises over a longer timeframe.

Five hundred and seventy-three million dollars of Labor's money comes from the regional infrastructure fund to be set up with some of the proceeds of the yet-to-be-legislated mineral resource rent tax and $600 million will be paid for by deferring for one year the tax discount on interest income, another plank of the Henry tax review.

Mr Abbott was also unsuccessful with his far more generous hospital funding offer to the Tasmanian independent Andrew Wilkie. Mr Abbott offered $1 billion to build a teaching hospital in Hobart but Mr Wilkie opted for Labor's $340 million upgrade plan on the basis its total response to his requests was better thought through and more affordable.

The National Party, for which the country independents' achievements pose a serious political threat, believes Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott have been ''conned''.

The Nationals leader, Warren Truss, said Labor's offer to the independents delivered far less for regional Australians than they would have received had the Coalition formed a government.

''Labor's $9.9 billion deal is mostly smoke and mirrors and I am amazed that the independents were so easily conned,'' he said. ''Six billion dollars of the proposed $9.9 billion package will trickle to the regions over 10 years and comes from the proceeds of a mining tax which will not even eventuate until 2015-16. There will be two more elections before then.''

As Labor and Liberal MPs returned to Canberra, others in the Coalition declared the Labor government to be ''illegitimate'' and seized on pre-existing policy differences between Labor and the Greens to claim ''a descent into policy chaos''.

Unidentified offset savings - steal from the needy and give to the greedy! That's why they supported Labor!

I am a local constituent in Port Macquarie. I am also a business owner in town. I have asked all of my customers what they think of the events which have unfolded and have been told unanimously that Rob has done the wrong thing. There is now a tipping competition starting up as to how long the Gillard government will last and to Rob's chances at the next election. Everyone is backing the Gillard government to last 6 months and Rob's chances have now blown out to slight to no chance of being re-elected. Sorry Rob but I think that you have committed political suicide. It is lucky while you were our state member that the tax payer paid for your law degree because you are going to need it to find a new job.

It's clear that Gillard offered the best retirement package.

I wish Rob was in my electorate, he is a "Braveheart". Only a one-eyed voter can't see the benefit to rural Australia. Some people will always vote Nationals, it's in their blood, and Labor will always be mud in their eyes. Take time to see what how this pans out and just get over it, that is his decision and I believe the country will benefit in the long term.

Personal ambition and agenda not the betterment of their electorate guided their decision.

Yep, spot on Greg. tigerdicky is a Labor follower and cannot raise enough brain matter to analyse the reason why voters in the Lyne electorate feel betrayed. A more than casual glance at the primary votes by polling booth will reveal why. Fact: biggest polling booth in the electorate is Port Macquarie PPVC, Labor vote was down 20% and only 9.42% of the total vote, Greens 3.08%, down 3%. Oakeshott had a good showing in the polling place but those voters certainly did not want Labor or the Greens. Game, set and match!

According to the latest reports, Mark Vaile set Oakshott up by not taking enough care with a replacement.
