Truckie thugs warn drivers to strike or be harmed

25 Jul, 2008 01:58 PM
A "rogue militant element" in the trucking industry has been accused of thuggery by the Australian Livestock Transporters Association, which says a recent fax campaign has threatened drivers with physical harm if they do not support next week's national transport shut down.

The peak body for rural carriers says the fax campaign came from a small group of owner-drivers.

ALTA claims the faxes state that any truck operators operating through the proposed strike period may be at risk of being harmed.

While many in the industry have been proposing to go on strike next week to protest tough new driver fatigue laws and high fuel prices, ALTA and its state associations want nothing to do with this action.

"We as an industry have some tough challenges ahead, but the ALTA is working with its customers in the meat and livestock sector to help work through the new fatigue laws," ALTA executive director Luke Fraser said.

Mr Fraser the threats from a small militant element of the wider industry were "desperate, menacing, vicious and in the end, would be counterproductive".

"We also work with our operators to help them get a better handle on fuel cost management," he said.

"And we continue to work with all Governments to make these new safety reforms practical for mum and dad operators and to bring about safer rural roads and better driver schedules.

"The militants out there are offering no solutions.

"They want to lash out to feel better about life and perhaps that is understandable, but they aren't fussed about who they hurt in the process.

"They seem prepared to damage all rural livelihoods for their own ends - we won't have that."

As a full time driver and past owner/driver i support any reasonable effort to increase rates and decrease fuel and operating costs. However, any threat and or force used to stop a driver who is required by an employer to work through a shut down is not going to engender one iota of support from the general public or any sort of positive action from the goverment of the day. i speak from experience, having survived the deregulation of the towing industy in S/E Qld.

Just what the media want to feed on. Sadly some of this is true - what have we sunk to?

I agreee with the Truckies...too long have they been kicked around by politicians...good on them. Some bureaucrat in an office has written these laws, probably with no input from the industry.

Who are these rogue militants? If they are part of different trucking associations then let the general public know. Name the Associations! The public will be watching very carefully. The threats have come even before this stoppage begins. Makes you wonder where they get the figure of 80% support amongst all truckies. Have they the support or not! Get onto www.ozprodrivers.com.au and see for yourself what a majority are saying about those who are calling for this stoppage. Go on! see the real story behind! I think the Trucking Industry will go down further in the public's eye after this foray. Who or what will they blame then?

If this stoppage does not go ahead the federal government has done you all over. This element tried once back in the early 70s on the razerback with minimul participation which came from mainly restraint from NSW drivers only. But if we stand together as a nation we will remain strong. Even if you are a small operator STAND YOUR GROUND. It will be hard because remember 'WITHOUT TRUCKS AUSTRALIA STOPS'.

Bring it on. Make Australia stop and look at what the trucking industry puts up with. I regularly hear people bagging truckies about how they wreck the road and cause accidents. These people now have their wish but how long will they have this opinion when the shops are empty??? Stand united and support the trucks. I have not heard one truck say they are not striking out of 30 trucking organisations. They all support the cause and have not been bullied in to it.

why worry about what the public thinks? They need trucks, though they don't realise it. Once the shops are empty, they will realise.

My partner is a truckie and I know all about the work-related stress and strain, long hours and frustrations. At 60, his job is very hard at times, but he loves the industry and is a dedicated, reliable and full-on work-a-holic. A true blue Aussie!

Unfortunately there's a lot of people copping the high diesel prices. Professional fisherman have quotas on their catch, restricted seasons they can fish and when they do they have to go hard, but with snowballing diesel costs it's at a point where operating costs are exceeding what they get told their fish are worth. Something needs to be done soon, keep with it.

Maybe trains, as were used in the past would help us all. No more bullying of car drivers by B doubles. Truck drivers could also have safer jobs and there would be less trucks. Our governments have a lot to answer for for letting our rail transport industry down.
