Rudd appoints new rural taskforce

22 May, 2008 01:34 PM
LABOR backbencher and member for the new Central Queensland seat of Flynn, Chris Trevor, has been appointed to head up a new rural and regional taskforce which will report directly back to the Prime Minister.

While Mr Trevor has not been given an exact job description yet, his role is to be the eyes and ears of the bush for Mr Rudd, and report to him with any concerns rural and regional people might have in their electorates or with the Government.

Mr Trevor was elected to Parliament at last year's election, having lived in Gladstone for most of his life.

He has worked as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia as well as a Senior Counsellor of the Queensland Law Society.

He has also served on the local council.

Mr Trevor expects more details will be known about his role in coming weeks.

Typical - no job description, no idea of what he is meant to be doing - this is pure Labor - all spin and no substance.

The first thing he should do is demand the PM sack Albanese for being so incompetent and gutting the Regional Partnerships Programmes, leaving many community groups in the lurch.

Shame on you Kev

I think we should give Chris a go.

We have a Labor Govt, and it is up to us to live with that, and get on with life.

Oh wonderful. Another great idea from KRudd.

Will this be a gloss over like all the rest of the rubbish they come up with?

When is someone going to tackle the real issues that are strangling our country especially the bush?

If they keep this up we will all be gone and with us the towns will die and be gone too.

No farmer - no food - no money; when are these idiots who are supposed to be running this country going to finally wake up to what is going on!!!!

The biggest problems from my perspective are over regulation on all primary producers which is making any sort of food production unviable.

Give us title to our land - Freehold title has been eroded through legistation and is now virtually the same as leasehold, it's a joke.

What about doing something sensible about our water and a decent plan to allow sensible clearing so that we can make a living.

If the Govt continues to take notice of the radical conservationists we are doomed mate, and it'll be time to pack up and leave.

I really wish people had the guts and determination to stand up and protest when they don't agree like they do overseas instead of just moaning and doing as they are told, even if it means they go broke in the process.

Oh it's just a copy of the deal Richard Torbay MP struck up with Morris Iemma in NSW.

All spin - no action.

What useful qualifications has this appointee got as far as actually having lived on the land away from a regional centre and doing it tough on a farm or in a small country business?

Do we really need a legal type well equipped with the art of circular arguments to administer this?

Would he know the proverbial s... from clay?

Mr Rudd would do well to listen to the vast majority of wheat growers and restore a single desk before the whole country is sold out to multi national corporations at the expense of family farmers.

Rudd is playing the same political game that the NSW Labor party has done with the Independent (former member of the ALP until 1997) Richard Torbay.

Plenty of spin and no substance is what can be expected.

The Greens will dominate any rural policy that Rudd wishes to introduce.

nothing useful can happen in the greenhouse debate till farmers are properly compensated for the tree clearing ban and the disruption to our lives caused by the oil gas and coal industries.

Why am I so cynical about this appointment?

Probably got something to do with:

1) Appointee has no rural regional experience which one would assume would be a primary requirement for the job;

2) Another taskforce/committee/spin & more hot air, just like all the other boards, committees etc;

3) 20 years of gradual erosion of every single service/infrastructure which is now so downgraded nobody wants to spend the huge amount of money required to bring them up to standard;

4) A business climate that is almost impossible because of governance requirements; and

5) Shows the level of interest for the bush by this government if they can't even put the effort into finding someone with national rural expertise.

But we will all give Kevin07 the option because we must live with it to the next election, and beyond, until we become as demanding as farmers in other countries when things are not right.

It's called being in control of your industry.
