More heatwaves likely as climate change worsens

05 Feb, 2009 01:43 PM
Australians can expect to experience longer periods of extreme heat as global warming forces temperatures higher, a weather expert warned today.

David Jones, the acting head of the National Climate Centre, says the recent heatwave conditions in south-eastern Australia, are related to climate change.

"People will need to get used to these sorts of heatwaves," he says.

"As the climate heats up through this century, they are going to become much more common.

"The good news is that the end (of the heatwave) is approaching but it is expected to get worse before it gets better."

"We've already seen a step up in the frequency of those days and that is expected to continue,'' he says, adding that the effect of climate change are most noticeable on days of extreme weather.

"Where previously we saw 40 degrees, that will now be 42 degrees.

"Where we had a day of 42 degrees, that will be 44, and so on.''

With the current heatwave still affecting parts of south-eastern Australia, Jones says that temperate conditions will continue to provide relief for those living in Melbourne and other parts of southern Victoria.

But the news is not so good for those living the state's north, in South Australia and southern NSW.

Mildura is on track to record 13 consecutive days of temperatures in excess of 40 degrees, which Jones says is nearly double the previous record.

Gippsland residents today have been warned to stay alert to the bushfire danger presented by the heat.

"Following the recent heat, the state is tinder-dry,'' Mr Jones says.

"With temperatures expected to rise into the weekend, those living in areas affected by bushfires need to remain alert to the danger.''

According to a special climate statement released by the Bureau of Meteorology, the most exceptional heat, compared with historic experience, occurred in northern and eastern Tasmania.

"The previous state record of 40.8 degrees, set at Hobart on 4 January 1976, was broken on January 29 (2008) when it reached 41.5 degrees - a record that lasted only one day,'' the statement said.

"On January 30, temperatures peaked at 42.2 degrees on the east coast town of Scamander. Four other sites broke the (1976) record that day.

"A notable record for prolonged heat was also set at Launceston airport, where there were three consecutive days above 37 degrees in a location which had never previously experienced consecutive days above 35 degrees.''

Melbourne recorded its second highest-ever temperature last week - 45.1 degrees - falling just short of the record - 45.6 - degrees on Black Friday, 13 January 1939.

The bureau says a stagnant weather pattern was to blame for the extended heatwave.

Victoria is not expected to get widespread rain as the heat subsides.

It was called global warming, now they call it climate change, to cover all bases.

This is unfounded and is being pushed by western governments worldwide as a way of increasing tax revenue. They are well aware that their revenue base is reducing due to ageing populations and ever expanding government providing inefficient services.

Most of these services should not be run by government. Whatever happened to personnel responsibility?

When people are hot, less energy is expended to get cool than is expended to warm up when it is cold.

A reverse cycle air conditioner uses less power to cool than to heat. Thus I believe our carbon footprint should become less as the climate warms.

This planet keeps having ice ages. It's caused by the earth's orbit around the sun. It doesn't follow the same track year in, year out.

For every ice age there has to be a warm period. The global warming agenda is a cash grab.

With due respect to climate expert David Jones, climate change is a natural phenomenon. It has been happening since the year dot and will continue until our solar system is so cold it will not sustain life.

Man's influence on climate change has been exaggerated beyond all belief.

Many people now believe it as gospel when it is nothing more than an unproven hypothesis.

Let's stick with the facts, Mr jones. You cannot tell us with surity how hot it will be next week or next month. Why do you expect us to believe you know what will happen in 10 years time?

Yep, no doubt about it we are in climate change all right. We are used to droughts as being normal, now we have an inconvenient wet spell in the north. Never happened before - yep the climate is changing.

This change should be exploited for all it's worth.

Step 1 is to identify every conceivable anomally and tax it.

Step 2 is to then create bogus fear in the general community then have a miraculuous solution requiring - yes you guessed it - another tax.

Now to really jump start all of this, why not take all our money, all our freedoms, all our rights as an individual and be done with it - stop this slow drip torture by couching in it climate change and we must bear the brunt.

Hmmmn, so whenever the wind blows from a dry Lake Eyre towards Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney it is evidence of global warming but whenever it blows west and produces 42C in Oodnadatta then it is not global warming.

An area much larger than Victoria and southern SA has been 6C below normal all through January but the fact that it is in underpopulated western Qld and NT means it is not proclaimed as evidence of global cooling. Funny that.

I'm flooded in...no hot weather here...it's cool, in February...we've skipped global warming here, so we must be doing everything right.

While reading the NQ Register, I read an article: Big Boas Ate Crocs...quoting that, in Colombia, 60 million years ago, "When the world was far hotter than now" giant boas ruled the rainforest and snacked on crocs.

Get a grip - global warming is a cash-grabbing myth by otherwise unempoyable bureaucrats and self-proclaimed "experts"...nothing backs their claims.

This is another beat up from the Climate Change Industry. Temperatures at Oodnadatta in South Australia reached 41 degrees. The highest temperature recorded at Oodnadattta was 50 degrees in 1960.
