Beckham to take on Roar

16/10/2008 11:46:34 AM

Queensland Roar will use December's clash with David Beckham's LA Galaxy as leverage to entice football fans back to Suncorp Stadium.

The long-reported game against the Major League Soccer side was this morning confirmed as December 11, three days before the Roar's A-League clash against reigning champions Newcastle. ------------------------- PHOTOS: David Beckham in action -------------------------

But with Queensland's home crowds down almost 2000 on the same stage last season, the club conceded the showpiece mid-season friendly would double as a major marketing boost for the A-League side.

"The game represents a great opportunity for us on the marketing front and introducing people to the code of football, possibly people who have never been to one of our matches before and maybe entice them to become regular supporters of the Roar," chief executive Lawrence Oudendyk said.

"This match I'm sure will ignite football in this state."

Paul Sargeant, from AEG Ogden - the company which owns Suncorp Stadium - refused to confirm which rival cities Brisbane had fought off but said both Football Federation Australia and the Galaxy wanted the game staged here.

"Members of the club have already been to Brisbane. They conducted a `recce' of the city and the area and were most impressed with what the city has to offer, with the training and playing facilities and with the people of Brisbane who they found friendly and welcoming," Sargeant said.
