12,000 set for Gold Coast marathon

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is officially the largest marathon event ever held in Australia, with 20,000 people registering to run the 42 kilometre-stretch tomorrow.

Entry numbers have risen by 4000 people from last year.

Premier Anna Bligh, who will also don running shoes tomorrow said news of the record number of entrants was a fantastic a boost for Queensland tourism.

"Not only is this the biggest marathon event in Australia, but it proves that Queensland is the place to be for major events," said Ms Bligh.

"Like everyone else, I will be lining up to participate in this great Queensland event this weekend and I encourage everyone to come along and experience the excitement that a race like this brings."

The inaugural Gold Coast Marathon, initiated by Surfers Paradise Rotary Club was held in September 1979 as part of the Gold Coast's health awareness campaign.

Thousands are expected to line the streets of Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise tomorrow to watch the serious race, which begins at 6:50am.

Events include the half-marathon, 10 kilometre run, 7.5 kilometre walk and Junior dash.

Registrations for the Gold Coast Airport Marathon can only be made in person at the Registrations Centre in the Asics Sport and Leisure Expo at the Race Precinct, Broadwater Events Parkland, Southport.

The Registrations Centre will be open until 5pm today.
