With agricultural productivity dipping sharply at the first drop of rain on dusty outback tracks, the Queensland Nationals are using the pressure of a looming election to lobby their Canberra counterparts for a better deal.
The Nationals' Shadow Minister for Roads, Vaughan Johnson, has called for Queensland to get a "fair go" from the Federal Government's $22 billion Auslink II program.
Last week his Federal counterpart, the Member for Maranoa, Bruce Scott, highlighted the pressing need for a $200m cash injection to ensure the State's critical industry development roads remain competitive - both nationally and internationally.
Mr Johnston's call for more Canberra cash came as:
• an RACQ 'snapshot' of outback roads, taken on June 26, details the full extent of road closures due to wet weather;
• a fall in regional tourist numbers last year suggests that inadequately-maintained roads may be a factor; and
• the Livestock Transporters Association of Queensland claims rural and regional road infrastructure is "falling apart" more quickly than it's being re-surfaced.
