Govt should pull plug on Vic pipeline

The Victorian Government's plan to pipe water into Melbourne from north of the Divide has outraged many in the Goulburn and Murray valleys - and not just because of the lack of public consultation carried out before the decision went down.

The Victorian Farmers Federation has long opposed taking productive water over the divide into Melbourne and condemned the Government at its annual conference for its "deceptive and deceitful conduct".

However, with the plan a reality it's now moved on to trying to get the best deal possible for irrigators - and has already won some important commitments, including that Melbourne Water won't be allowed to enter the water market or to sell any of its share of water savings.

And the plan is not all bad with some farmers arguing sending water to Melbourne will be worth it for the planned upgrades to badly ageing infrastructure in the valleys.

But many remain strongly opposed to plan as evidenced by a big rally in Shepparton this week.

Those at the rally came out in strong support of the upgrades - and just as strong opposition to the pipeline.

But one won't happen without the other.

What do you think? Should the pipeline go ahead?

If every suburban household had a 5000gallon tank to collect rainwater then there would be no need for this pipeline, nor pilfering of rarely seen rural water resources.

As well, the user would pay the price and see how much water they waste/or save.

When food prices are thru the roof it might sink home in suburbia that irrigation water is desperately needed in the bush where its use actually produces something of value.

Simon, you can't have "two bob" each way.

Either listen to your voting farmers and act on their behalf, or resign.

The self-interest groups are at it again.

Here we are offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to overcome State bickering and build a proper management infrastructure for our most precious and scarce resource.

Enter the narrow-minded....

For Australia's sake, get on with it.

I think a lot of hot air is being releaced in the water debate, like the oil debate and the climate change debate, and the y2k2 bug.

All about money very little about Truth. If you freeze water it expands.

If you bring water up from deep within the earth it is again in the cycle not locked up for ever.

We need a good dose of commonsense in the water debate not scare mongering or self interest.
